New environmental bonus: Brussels gives green light

The funding for the purchase of an electric car or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will amount to up to 6,000 euros in the future. On February 11, the European Commission approved Berlin’s plan not only to extend the environmental bonus until 2025, but to increase it. The federal government’s plan was already made at the end of 2019, but only now has the EU’s confirmation reached the capital. Review: After the subsidy ran out for a short time, sales of electric vehicles collapsed. Car manufacturers such as Nissan, Renault, Hyundai and Kia reacted and increased the purchase premium with their own funds. That will no longer be necessary.

New bonus retroactive until November 4, 2019

The increased environmental bonus is applicable to all electric vehicles that were registered after November 4, 2019. The new subsidy for electric cars provides a premium of EUR 6,000 for vehicles up to a net list price of EUR 40,000. It was raised by 50 percent. For vehicles over 40,000 euros net list price, the allowance rose by 25 percent to 5,000 euros. The funding also applies to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) up to a net list price of EUR 40,000, which now enjoy a grant of EUR 4,500. The funding for the hybrids can be up to € 3,750 above the € 40,000 limit.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier was satisfied on February 11 with the promise from Brussels: “I am pleased that the European Commission gave the green light today for the adjustment of the environmental bonus for electric vehicles.” In a press release, he promised that the new funding guidelines would come into force soon. The Christian Democrat emphasized that the industry would continue to contribute half of the environmental bonus. The other half would be borne by the taxpayer. The new funding guidelines are due to be published in the Federal Gazette in February and will therefore come into force.

Update / addendum to this article on February 19, 2020: On February 18, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) published the announcement of the directive on the promotion of sales of electric vehicles (environmental bonus). The new environmental bonus has thus entered into force.
