At the end of February 2020, Deutsche Post had declared the end of the Streetscooter. This was the reason for this step Companies with “current global economic uncertainties” at the time. Now there is a delay for the production sites in Aachen and Düren and the approximately 300 remaining employees.

Production should be phased out more slowly

On November 11, 2020, Deutsche Post announced that it would phase out production more slowly than originally planned. The now announced extension of production should extend into the coming year. Deutsche Post, as the owner of the e-delivery car, established this step on the one hand with existing, long-term supplier contracts.

The lack of alternatives to the street scooter is the other reason, according to the Post. The group, which announced in March that it would make its entire logistics climate-neutral by 2050, does not currently see a successor for the street scooter in sight.

Little hope of a comeback

Although the production of the street scooter is to be continued in 2021, there is little hope for the former, electric hope of Deutsche Post: The group no longer accepts orders for the electricity-powered van and only produces for its own use.

Missing orders had also led to the original Streetscooter-Aus. UPS among others decided against the Stromer from the border triangle. Deutsche Post acquired the street scooter production company in 2014 and built a plant in Düren. In 2018, the postal subsidiary posted a loss of 70 million euros, in 2019 it was already 100 million

In the previous year, sales of e-vehicles in the European Union rose by a whopping 44 percent. Around 600,000 vehicles – either fully electric or equipped with hybrid drive – were sold in the EU. That is around 2.8 percent of all new registrations.

The Chinese market is slacking, the USA shows a decline

In an international comparison, demand in China only increased by three percent. Nevertheless, the Chinese market remains the largest in the world: Around 1.2 million new electric vehicles were registered in the world’s most populous country in 2019 – worldwide there were 2.3 million vehicles. The US market shrank by twelve percent in the same period and recorded 300,000 new registrations.

Germany’s largest market in the EU

In the European union of states, Germany is one step ahead. According to McKinsey & amp; Company, sales contracts for around 110,000 e-vehicles were concluded in Germany in 2019. Top value in the EU and third place worldwide. But: With a market share of 2.8 percent for e-cars, Germany is in the European average – here Norway with almost 45 percent market share, Iceland (22%) and the Netherlands (13%) lead the world.

Germany could become world market leader

The Electric Vehicle Index 2020 published at the beginning of March dares to analyze the current situation also take a look into the future: German carmakers could be the big winners here. According to the analysts, the share of German manufacturers in global e-car production will increase from currently 18 to 29 percent in 2024. With 1.7 million electric vehicles built, Germany could become world market leader as early as next year, explain the authors of the EVI.

Last October, Frank Appel, head of the German post office, described the street scooter as a success. Now the German Post wants to stop production – this year. Last Friday, February 28, 2020, the Bonn-based company issued an Press release about the Streetscooter-Aus in circulation . The “current global economic uncertainties” are the cause of the U-turn in the case of the e-truck and the planned production stop.

Orders are still being processed, production stopped

Deutsche Post is planning to phase out production at its Aachen and Düren locations this year. According to the press release, new orders would no longer be accepted and only the delivery of already fixed orders would be processed. You want ” will now concentrate on the operation of the current street scooter fleet “, announced the logistician. The current vehicle fleet of around 11,000 e-delivery vans is expected to grow to 15,000.

Review: In 2014, Deutsche Post acquired the production company located in the triangle of three countries. It had emerged four years earlier from a privately organized research initiative at RWTH Aachen University. When the Post joined the company, a street scooter factory was built in Düren, the production capacity of which has not been fully utilized in the past six years. In 2018, the postal subsidiary posted a loss of 70 million euros, in 2019 it was already 100 million.

UPS decided against Streetscooter

In addition to these figures, it became known two weeks ago that competitor UPS was looking for an e-mobility solution against the street scooter and had decided to cooperate with the British start-up Arrival . On February 7th, Streetscooter managing director Jörg Sommer had announces its departure . After the end of the German e-delivery van became known, Streetscooter co-founder Günther Schuh spoke up and practiced in an Guest comment in the” Handelsblatt “ Criticism of the Post.

Schuh criticizes the post office and business location

“External sales were stopped for three years, internationalization as well, the planned re-engineering program as well, normal procurements were postponed, management was kicked out, amateurs were deployed, orders from the company’s own postal fleet were minimized, any improvement was prohibited – and waited for an opportunity to cease business under a pretext. ”, explained Günther Schuh, who, in addition to his professorship in the imperial city, is CEO of Electric car manufacturer Ego Mobile and described the end of the electric delivery van as a “poor certificate for Germany”. Concrete plans as to how things will continue for the roughly 500 Streetscooter employees at the Aachen and Düren locations are not yet known.

The federal government’s plan was drawn up at the end of 2019, but the EU’s confirmation has only now reached the capital. Review: After the funding expired for a short time, sales of electric vehicles collapsed. Car manufacturers such as Nissan, Renault, Hyundai and Kia responded and increased the purchase premium with their own funds. This will no longer be necessary.

New premium retrospectively until November 4, 2019

The increased environmental bonus is applicable to all electric vehicles registered after November 4, 2019. The new subsidy for electric cars provides for a bonus of 6,000 euros for vehicles with a net list price of up to 40,000 euros. It has thus been increased by 50 percent. For vehicles with a net list price of over 40,000 euros, the allowance rose by 25 percent to 5,000 euros. The funding also applies to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) up to a net list price of 40,000 euros, which now enjoy a grant of 4,500 euros. Above the 40,000 euro limit, the subsidy for the hybrid can be up to 3,750 euros.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier was satisfied with the commitment from Brussels on February 11th: “I am delighted that the European Commission has given the green light today for the adjustment of the environmental bonus for electric vehicles.” In a press release he promised that the new funding guidelines would soon come into force The Christian Democrat emphasized that industry would continue to share half of the environmental bonus, and the other half would be borne by the taxpayer.

Update / addendum to this post on February 19, 2020: On February 18, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) published the announcement of the guideline for the promotion of the sale of electrically powered vehicles (environmental bonus). The new environmental bonus has thus come into force.

They should first roll on the streets in Europe and North America. UPS does not rely on the German street scooter, but on a British start-up.

UPS cooperates with Arrival & participates

the British start-up Arrival won the lot for the development and production of the 10,000 new Last-Stromer. The London-based start-up is said to have completed the contract by 2024 and received an option to produce an additional 10,000 vehicles. The company, which is entrusted with the production of e-delivery goods in the classic UPS brown shade, was founded in 2015 in the British capital and today has around 500 employees.

In addition to the placement of the with around $ 400 million contract , UPS participates in Arrival. Participation in Arrival is an important step in tackling the challenges of urban traffic problems and environmental pollution, said the US logistician in an press release announced. As part of the cooperation with UPS, Arrival will also drive the development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
